Mr. Graham Godley

This is a letter from my dear friend and patient Mr. Graham Godley sent to American Way Airlines in 2010.  Like many other patients his story is very inspirational and he specifically requested that I share this on our new website.  You can also listen to an interview with Dr. Lizbeth Ryan and Mr. Graham Godley on the Hannah Murray Show (Talk Radio Europe).

Herewith revised version in letter form.

Dear AmericanWay,

A hope of vision.

It was Halloween 2010 when I flew home to Spain from Rogers (NW Arkansas) after having a course of acupuncture treatments for retinitis pigmentosa to help improve my near blindness.  During the flight from Dallas to Madrid I reached into the seat pocket in front of me and fished out a copy of AmericanWay to help while away the time. (On my outbound flight three and a half weeks earlier I would not have even attempted to read your or any other magazine). Flicking through the various ads and articles I thought “what a great way to tell my story”.

Everybody has someone in their lives who are sentenced to coping with low vision or blindness, whether caused by Macular Degeneration, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Retina Degeneration Glaucoma, amongst others. We have all be told the same old thing, “sorry, nothing can be done”. Well many others and I are living proof that something can, and is being done very successfully in Rogers, NW Arkansas. Treatment is a unique form of Acupuncture or micro acupuncture, needles are placed in the feet and hands. I know it sounds improbable but it works, and has been helping hundreds of people fortunate enough to learn of the Arkansas Acupuncture Center.

I won’t bore you with masses of facts and figures except for;

  • Every 7 minutes someone in the United States loses his or her sight.
  • According to the Braille Institute 21% of persons over the age of 65 report visual impairment (7.3 million people).

See http://www.brailleinstitute.org/sight_loss_blog/index.php/1-facts-about-sight-loss-symptoms-leading-eye-diseases

I am 64, British, officially registered blind in the U.K.  September 2003 and now choose to live in southern Spain, amongst the hills of Andalusia. Through youth until my mid forties I had increasingly severe Myopia, in 1991 I experienced retinal detachment in my left eye. I had surgery to re-attach the retina but unfortunately it was too little too late and  lost about 95% of vision in that eye. At the same time my surgeon used cryo to the back of my right eye to secure that retina, this was successful however I did lose some vision through scarring. My vision deteriorated to the point when I was registered blind in September 2003. I was told that there was no chance of any improvement, in fact the prognosis was quite the opposite  most people with your condition (Retinal Deterioration) end up with some vision, albeit not much! Oh great thought I.  I also have retinitis pigmentosa.

I learned of the Arkansas Acupuncture Center (AAC,) which at that time was situated in Hot Springs Village AR. After some deliberation I bit the bullet and traveled from Spain to Arkansas in October 2004 for a course of acupuncture treatments for vision loss.

Unlike so many eye treatments we hear and read about, this is not experimental, not a case of being available maybe in 5-10 years from now, it¹s happening now. I am sure that many of your passengers would be interested if not for themselves,  there will be someone in their lives with seeing difficulties. Snake oil it aint, it works, I have now had a number of treatments treatment at the center which I found enormously beneficial, I have also seen the treatment work for others time and time again.  There are no drugs, no invasive and risky surgery. A fully qualified Doctor of Chinese medicine, Doctor Lizbeth Ryan, undertakes all treatments.

My improvement is modest compared those experienced by many of my fellow patients. Suffice it to say I now have a very real improvement and just as important, stability in my level of vision. My intention is to continue visiting every 6 months to build on the improvement I am experiencing. To a blind person any improvement, no matter how small is a great deal.  My wish is that you are able to relate my story in American Way and give many of your passengers, or someone in their lives a vision of hope.

Sincerely Yours, Graham H. Godley
